FAMILY HOME DESIGN — METHOW VALLEY ARCHITECTURE — GREEN DESIGN
METHOW VALLEY, WASHINGTON
This contemporary northwest escape enables family and friends to socialize, recreate, and relax in the surrounding natural environment of the Methow Valley.
The core of the home is the living room, dining area, and kitchen. Expansive windows and glass doors frame views from this space designed for practicality and purpose. Blackened steel is a dramatic backdrop for the kitchen. Contrasting warm wood adds to the distinctly mid-century modern vibe. With the adjacent outdoor patio, the custom-designed table on wheels can be easily rolled outside.
The home’s exterior, with durable steel and cement, blends into the muted tones of its environment. At a single-story, from nearby hiking trails and roads, the home almost disappears from view. The roof’s design retains snow and keeps drifts from piling up against the siding and windows, while taking advantage of the snows insulating properties.
Green Design: super-insulated envelope, carbon-neutral wood heat, renewable hydro power, designed to serve generations

Tim Hammer did an amazing job managing the design and construction of our cabin. It was a complex project sited in the North Cascades--a five-hour drive from CAST office in Seattle. The site receives 120 inches of snow in the winter and 100+ degree days in the summer. The cabin needed to function as a home base for multiple families engaging in varied outdoor activities--skiing, hiking, biking, climbing, and fishing. The house had to have a small footprint, be unobtrusive, low maintenance, energy efficient, easy to keep clean, manage and organize.
Every function was thoughtfully considered and designed--from the bunk beds to the ski waxing table, to the mobile dining room table. Tim is a great listener, observer/interpreter who managed us well and delivered the cabin we wanted. -
